Is it possible?
Michael Wheeler, University of Western Australia says YES.
His study involved 35 women and 32 men aged between 55 and 80 who tried these regimes:
- Sitting for 8 hours
- 1 hour of sitting then 30 minutes of moderate walking followed by 6.5 hours of sitting
- 1 hour of sitting before 30 minutes walking followed by 6.50 hours of sitting with 3 minutes of light walking every 30 minutes.
The results?
Both men and women saw lower blood pressure with the two exercise plans.
Women – but not men – saw worthwhile extra gains if the also did the 3-minute walks.
What does this mean?
Just 30 minutes of exercise every morning may be as effective as medication for lowering blood pressure for the rest of the day.
