Jessie Bell

BA, TTC, ATCL

One of the best moments Jessie has experienced since she began teaching the Brainfit for Life course in 2014 was watching the life-changing impact it had on a student in her eighties.

This lovely lady sat and talked to Jessie about how much the course had helped her.  She had been losing confidence in her memory and comments from other people didn’t help.  By the end of the course, she was feeling confident again and very glad that she had techniques to help her.

“This reinforced my belief in this course and its benefits. It was so rewarding to see how it had helped this person”.

Teaching has always been one of Jessie’s passions.  After growing up on a farm in Helensville she attended university and Teachers’ Training College in Auckland and spent the next five decades working at secondary schools around the North Island – Glendowie College, Otamatea High School, Pukekohe High School, Gisborne Girls’ High School and Kamo High School.

While raising her three children in Gisborne she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in education from Massey University, graduating in 1996.

In 2002 Jessie and her husband Mike moved to Whangarei, where she taught English and drama at Kamo High School, becoming head of the Arts faculty in 2011.  A registered speech teacher who has ATCL qualifications in speech and drama and musical theatre, since retiring from full time teaching in  2013 she has enjoyed running private speech and drama classes from her home and online.

Jessie has a lifelong love of singing and acting and has performed with musical and theatre groups wherever she has lived.  Having been a member of Opera North and the Coastal Singers in Whangarei, she was very happy to be introduced to Mosaic, the Cambridge Community Choir, and is enjoying singing with this “inspiring group”.

Jessie and her husband have lived in Cambridge since 2021, where they enjoy walking, cycling and kayaking together in their spare time. After teaching Brainfit courses in Northland from 2014-2020 and seeing the impact it can have on people’s lives, she is now looking forward to bringing this “excellent and rewarding course” to Waipa.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

“I have been fairly sure I was keeping up with “aging” and memory retention but because I attended Brainfit, I feel encouraged, given tools to improve my memory and Jessie delivers with humour and skills.”

Colleen

“I have recently finished a course called Brainfit For Life with Jessie. It is the best thing I have done to improve my mind for ages and will continue to practice the mental and physical exercises I learnt. I also enjoyed meeting a new group of people, we intend to continue meeting once a month for a chat over coffee. Thank you Jessie you were great.”

Robyn Wilson

“I enjoyed this course as I mixed with others, learnt what I can and can’t do well and know what I need to practice more.  Thank you for your energy in delivering the course, Jessie.  I find the book invaluable.”

Carol

“The course has been so enjoyable and it’s with real enthusiasm that I leave each week to test my knowledge.  Absolutely inspiring.  It’s like eating something delicious and wanting more.”

Mary, Northland, NZ

“Feel encouraged, very hopeful of improving memory.  Stimulated.  Had excellent teacher, many wonderful laughs, much to learn.”

Pat

“I liked the way Jessie presented the course.  It was very low key and non-threatening and encouraging.  Her pace was good, we got through the material well and had a few laughs. It is good to prepare to deal with decreasing memory.”

Penny, Whangarei

“Thank you for the course.  It has made me feel so much better about myself and have “exercises” to maintain my self-confidence.”
