LIZ IRWIN

Dip. OT, NZROT, BHSc (Hons), Accredited Brainfit® Coach - Auckland

Liz Irwin is an occupational therapist, educated in New Zealand and the United States. She has over 30 years’ experience in the field and has worked in Australia. Her passion is neuro-occupational therapy focusing on concussion management and recovery. She has personally experienced how difficult it is to recover from a concussion injury. She understands the similarities between concussion recovery and recovery from “chemo brain” and the effects other factors have on cognition, including stress, mental health issues and sleep deprivation. She also understands the role exercise and healthy eating can have on cognitive function. She is the clinical lead for the adult concussion service at Specialist Rehab Services, Auckland.

Liz also has a keen interest in falls prevention and is qualified in the Australian “Stepping On” falls prevention program.

She has tramped all over the South Island of New Zealand, and travelled and hiked in America and South America, and speaks Spanish “un poco” (a bit). She likes new challenges and has parachuted (solo jumped via tether), paraglided, rock climbed, cross country skied, snow-shoed, dog sledded, white water rafted, sea kayaked, canoed, paddle-boarded, and learned to ride a motorcycle (which she learned she did not really enjoy as she is only 158cms, is slight and struggled to hold the bike up!). She is relearning to play tennis (when she is not nursing injuries from this).

Liz currently enjoys the outdoors especially spending time on or in the ocean, snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing. She enjoys sailing and motor-boating. She enjoys spending time with her family making brunch for them, playing cards, board games and reading, and is an avid op-shopper. She loves listening to music, especially her partner playing the guitar and singing the songs he has written.

Liz is a Lion’s club member and values supporting the monthly book sales and giving something back to the community.

She is an Accredited Brainfit® coach and can offer courses, face-to -ace or zoom consultations and can support you with your cognitive rehabilitation to help you regain what you have lost. She receives great feedback from her clients.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

“A revelation! What a wake up call and an exciting view of the new possibilities ahead of me.”

Sally, Auckland

“Brainfit was an enjoyable way to understand and learn about my brain and memory. Highly Recommend!”

Carmen, Auckland

“I am very much enjoying my Brainfit class. Highly recommend”

Liz Hannan

Very clearly presented.  Good balance between information and practice.  Most people do not know you can reverse your ‘brain loss’.

Martine, Auckland, NZ

I am thoroughly enjoying the course and find it very beneficial, so thank you.

A. Hogan Auckland, NZ

“Very valuable hints to encourage healthy memory. Thoroughly enjoyable and non-threatening. Younger people need to be encouraged to take the course.”

Pauline, Auckland, NZ

“I enjoyed this course as I mixed with others, learnt what I can and can’t do well and know what I need to practice more.  Thank you for your energy in delivering the course, Jessie.  I find the book invaluable.”

Carol

“It is an extremely stimulating and useful course at any age or stage.  I like the follow-up emails which remind me to keep up the things I’ve learnt.”

Jane B, NZ

“The course was fun and well presented. I found myself looking forward to each class and was very pleased when I got the opportunity to catch up on one class that I was unable to attend at the time.”

Jane

“I have struggled with cognitive issues as I have advanced in years, it has really worried me. Having been in Ina Meeten’s class in Blenheim, I am a lot more confident that I can look forward to many more years without “losing my marbles”!! I now have a real purpose in life, and I think I can help others as well. Thank you.”

Ben Wickham, Blenheim NZ

“Veronique, this was a most fabulous course which I think is relevant to anyone of any age. I was a little nervous about attending, but it was very empowering to be taught how to enhance brain health and memory. The course was really well structured, illustrating and reinforcing how the memory works and you made it interesting and fun.”

Bridget, North Shore

“Feel encouraged, very hopeful of improving memory.  Stimulated.  Had excellent teacher, many wonderful laughs, much to learn.”

Pat

“I really enjoyed the course and the calm and gentle way you led us – thank you very much.”

Scott, Riverhead

“I have recently finished a course called Brainfit For Life with Jessie. It is the best thing I have done to improve my mind for ages and will continue to practice the mental and physical exercises I learnt. I also enjoyed meeting a new group of people, we intend to continue meeting once a month for a chat over coffee. Thank you Jessie you were great.”

Robyn Wilson

“Thanks for yesterday’s ‘power hour & a half!’ After the training, I spoke about the content with my husband and he particularly liked (as well as I) methods to learn someone’s name by taking a mental picture and making relevant associations. We will both be trying this as and when we meet new people.”

Thelma, Auckland, NZ
“The course has made a difference already.  Not just remembering things I need to do,  but motivation for the act of doing them. Today I contacted 2 friends whose birthday it is. I usually remember but don’t necessarily act upon it. The relief of doing this, instead of having to remember again another day is wonderful. You made important stuff such fun.”
Margaret, Feilding NZ

“It is an extremely stimulating and useful course at any age or stage. I like the follow-up emails which remind me to keep up the things I’ve learnt.”

Angela,

“Very worthwhile course & well worth the few hours it takes. Lots of good new tricks to aid the ageing grey matter!”

Roger Milne, NZ

“I think focus-connect-rehearse says it all for me. I met a man a few days ago and he was actually admiring my bike. We ended up chatting and he told me his wife was Sue and he was Neil. Bingo!”

Bevan, Auckland, NZ

“These classes have helped me find specific areas I need to work on to help with my concussion-related injury.”

Angelique, Christchurch
